Adjective Endings

Placement of adjectives

• coleur: après le nom (after the noun)

• nationalite: après le nom

• adjectif numeraux cardinaux (numbers): avant le nom (before the noun)

  • With dernier/prochaine, it depends on context: if it is standing in for a number (prochaine bus), put it before the noun, if it is standing in for a time (weekend dernier), put if after

• adjectifs courts et fréquent: avant le nom

• `ex. belle/beau, jolie, vieux

Colors Weird Rules

• most match # and gender of the noun they describe unless

  • the color is also a noun i.e. orange, marron, noisette (EXCEPT rose, violette, mauve, châtain) - don’t change for plural

  • there is an adjective describing the color (i.e. les fleurs bleu ciel)

  • there are two colors (les chemises noir et blanc)
