Assimilation
one phone becomes more similar to its neighboring phone within its phonetic function
Dissimilation
Causes two adjacent sounds to become less similar because of some speech-obstructive phonetic property
Vowel Harmony
vowels will 'harmonize' within a word; like long distance assimilation within a word
Insertion
Causes segment not already present at phonemic level to be added to phonetic form of word (i.e. the 'k' sound in the word strength)
Deletion
deletes a phonetic form of a sound that is still produced phonemically (comprehensible even when a sound is deleted during quick speech)
Strengthening/Fortition
causes it to sound stronger
Weakening/Lenition
causes it to sound weaker
