Muscular and Nervous System
The control of breathing is achieved through the interaction of these two systems.
Medulla Oblongata
The part of the brain that contains the respiratory center, responsible for automatic breathing control.
Chemoreceptors in the aorta and carotid arteries
These structures monitor the oxygen levels in the blood.
Increased breathing rate
The respiratory center signals for this to occur when oxygen levels fall.
Medulla Oblongata
The part of the brain monitors CO2 levels in the blood.
H2CO3
The chemical formula for carbonic acid, formed when carbon dioxide dissolves in blood.
H+ ions
Increased levels of these ions result in a decrease in pH, leading to acidic blood.
Medulla Oblongata
Acidic blood stimulates this part of the brain to increase breathing.
