When was James I crowned as King of England?
He was crowned on the 25th July 1603 after the death of Elizabeth I.
What is a patronage?
It was an important part of the political system and could lead to a growth in factions. The system of patronages were often fluid.
What are crown lands?
They were increasingly diminished in importance as a succesive lord treasures saw the sale of land being the quickest, easiest to raise immediate revenue.
What are custom revenue?
They were tonnage and poundage were taxes or imports and exports collected by the Crown.
What is a wardship?
A system where the Crown took control of the land and guardianship of a minor heir until the heir came of age, generating revenue for the Crown.
What is a monopoly?
The monarch’s grant exclusive access rights yo make and sell goods of a particular kind. An example of this
What was the Millenary petition?
It was a petition introduced by Puritans in 1603 who wanted James I to sign as they assumed he had similar beliefs to them (Scottish Presbyterianism). It contained policies that they wanted him to enforce on England.

What was the Hampton Conference?
It was a debate based on the Millenary Petition that James I had received from the Puritans.
