Schedule I (C-I)
Highest potential for abuse
For research only. Must have license to obtain. No accepted medical use in US
(Heroin, Lysergic Acid, Diethylamide, Marijuana)
Schedule II (C-II)
High possibility of abuse, which can lead to severe psychological or physical dependence
Dispensing is severely restricted. Cannot be prescribed by phone except in an emergency. No refills on prescriptions.
Narcotic pain meds and stimulants for ADHD
(Morphine, Oxycodone, Meperidine, Hydromorphone, Fentanyl)
Schedule III (C-III)
Moderate potential for abuse and addiction
Prescriptions can be refilled up to five times within six months if authorized by a physician.
Not > 90mg codeine/unit, testosterone products
(Codeine with Aspirin, Codeine with Acetaminophen, Anabolic Steroids)
Schedule IV (C-IV)
Low abuse potential; associated with limited physical or psychological dependence
Prescriptions can be refilled up to five times within six months if authorized by a physician.
Sleep / anxiety medications
(Benzodiazepines, Meprobamate, Phenobarbital)
Schedule V (C-V)
Lowest abuse potential
Some sold without a prescription depending on state law: purchaser must be over 18 years and is required to sign a log and show a driver’s license.
