Cations are
postiive ions
Anions are
negative ions
the arrangement of electrons in an atom is called the atoms
electron configuration
These rules define how electrons can be arranged in an atoms orbitals
The Aufbau principle
The Pauli Exclusion principle
Hund’s Rule
This states that each electron occupies the lowest energy orbital available
Aufbau Principle
Electrons in orbitals can be represented by
arrows in boxes
this represents an unoccupied orbital
An Empty Box
Thsi states that A max of 2 electrons can occupy a single atomic orbital, but only if the electrons have opposite spins
Pauli Exclusion Principle
This rule states that single electrons w the same spin must occupy each equal energy orbital before additional electrons w opposite spins can occupy the same orbitals
Hunds rule
You can represent an atoms electron config using one of 2 methods
orbital diagrams
electron config notation
electrons in orvitals can be represented by arrows in boxes
Orbital Diagrams
For this method, instead of boxes, it includes a superscript representing the number of electrons in the orbital
Electron Configuration Notation
is a method of representing electron configurations by using the noble gases
noble gas notations
The noble gas notation uses
bracketed symbols
are defined as electrons in the atoms outermost orbitals, these orbitals are associated w the atoms highest principal energy level
Valence electrons
The Electron dot structures are also known as
Lewis Structure
this consists of the element symbol surrounded by dots representing all of the atoms valence electrons
Electron dot structures or lewis structure
