A study that compares two groups of people; those with disease (case) and similar group without (control). Researchers study medical and lifestyle histories in each group to learn what factors may be associated with that disease.
Case-control study
A group or series of case reports involving patients who were given similar treatment. Reports of case series usually contain detailed information about the individual patient. This includes demographic information (age, gender, ethnic origin) and info on diagnosis, treatment, response to treatment and follow-up to treatment.
Case series
A research study that compares a particular outcome (lung cancer) in groups of individuals who are alike in many ways but differ in characteristics (e.g. female nurses; who smoke compared to those who don’t smoke)
Cohort study
A type of study in which groups of people is observed or certain information is collected, at a single point in time or over a short period. Results may be used to plan other research studies.
Cross-sectional study
A specific way of analysing a sequence of data points collected over an interval of time

Individuals are sampled and information is collected from their past
