Roger -He had just killed piggy with the rock. He was the hangman. Everyone was shocked/horrified bc he enjoyed it this is the death of civilized behavior/ intelligence as well as law and order- the conch gets shattered

Johnny - character and symbolism, johnny was the first boy to appear from the initial call of the conch... shows are already they have become a bit on civilized or have an adapter to not having adults telling them what to do
"[His] arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins." (pg 62)
Roger - symbolism and character(beginning of evil) he isn't quite savage yet, this is when he's throwing rocks at the littluns but avoids hitting them because he still has the voice of adults in his head telling him not too, even though the adults don't know it's happening and their civilization is also in ruins from the war
"The tears began to flow and sobs shook him...[he] wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man's heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise, friend." (pg 202)
Ralph - he cried because he finally could there was an adult there so he didn't have to be leader piggy had just been killed any good family morn
"But there was stillness about [him] as he sat that marked him out: there was his size, and attractive appearance; and most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch." (pg 22)
Ralph - symbolism and theme, this is when Ralph is about to be voted as chief, and he represents leadership, law, and order, and the conch represents power and order
"A thing was crawling out of the forest. It came darkly, uncertainly. The shrill screaming that rose before the beast was like a pain. The beast stumbled into the horseshoe." (pg 152)
Simon - symbolism, this is showing how the boys are so close to uncivilization and inhumanity that when humanity (simon) and the truth makes it's way in, they mistake it for the beast and kill it
"...for a minute became less a hunter than a furtive thing, apelike among the tangle of trees...He passed like a shadow under the darkness of the tree and crouched, looking down at the trodden ground at his feet." (pg 49)
Jack - character and symbolism (savagery) this is jack hunting and it's showing how into the hunting he gets, and is showing itself as one of his main motives while on the island
"He sighed...Then, with the martyred express of a parent who has to keep up with the senseless ebullience of the children, he picked up the conch, turned towards the forest, and began to pick his way over the tumbled scar." (pg 38)
Piggy - symbolism and character, in the beginning of the book when they are going to the mountain for the first time, this is showing his voice of reason
"something like a great ape was sitting asleep with its head between its knees...and the creature lifted its head, holding toward them the ruin of a face." (pg 96)
The dead parachutist - symbolism, this is when Samneric mistake it for a beast, which is when fear and jack takes over, and it launches the hunting frenzy, and excelerates the unraveling of civilization
"The water rose farther and dressed [his] coarse hair with brightness. The line of his cheek silvered and the turn of his shoulders became sculptured marble. The strange attendant creatures, with their fiery eyes and trailing vapors, busied themselves round his head." (pg 154)
Simon - character and symbolism, this is Simon floating out to sea after he dies, and this symbolizes humanity and kindness leaving the island and the boys

Ralph (pg 180) - confronting jack and trying to get Piggy's glasses back

Jack (pg 187) - when jack tries to vote himself in as chief and gets humiliated and runs away to start his own tribe
