What is a redox reaction?

When reduction and oxidaition happen simultaneously in a reaction.

What are oxidation states?

List the rules:

  • The oxidation state of an element tells you the total number of electrons it has donated or accepted.

  • uncombined elements have an oxidation number of 0. H2

  • The oxidation state of a simple monatomic ion is the same as it’s charge Na+, Mg 2+

  • The sum of the oxidation state for a neutral compound is 0.

  • Combined oxygen is nearly always -2, except in peroxides, where it’s -1.

  • Combined Hydrogen is +1 except in metal hydrides where it is -1. and H2 is 0.

What do we use ionic half-equations for

To show oxidation or reduction

4
New cards

When combining half equations, only edit one side to match the electrons of the other and then ignore the electrons when you cancel out.
