What is a redox reaction?
When reduction and oxidaition happen simultaneously in a reaction.
What are oxidation states?
List the rules:
The oxidation state of an element tells you the total number of electrons it has donated or accepted.
uncombined elements have an oxidation number of 0. H2
The oxidation state of a simple monatomic ion is the same as it’s charge Na+, Mg 2+
The sum of the oxidation state for a neutral compound is 0.
Combined oxygen is nearly always -2, except in peroxides, where it’s -1.
Combined Hydrogen is +1 except in metal hydrides where it is -1. and H2 is 0.
What do we use ionic half-equations for
To show oxidation or reduction
When combining half equations, only edit one side to match the electrons of the other and then ignore the electrons when you cancel out.
