Matter
Everything around us; includes all materials and substances.
Material
A certain type of matter.
Substance
A pure type of solid, liquid, or gas; not a mixture.
Particle
A very small part or bit of something.
Change of State
When materials and substances change forms when heated or cooled.
Melting
The change of state from solid to liquid.
Freezing
The change of state from liquid to solid.
Physical Process
A process where only the form of a substance changes, not its chemical identity.
Chemical Reaction
Occurs when substances mix and form a new material; often irreversible.
Irreversible
A process that cannot be reversed to obtain the original substances.
Volcano
A crack in the Earth's crust that allows magma to rise and erupt as lava.
Earthquake
A sudden movement of rocks in the Earth's crust, creating energy waves.
Tsunami
A huge sea wave caused by an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption.
Habitat
The environment where an organism lives and thrives.
Reflection
The bouncing of light off an object.
Ray Diagram
A diagram used by scientists to represent the path of light.
