Advent
“Coming” or “arrival,” this term refers to the coming of Jesus Christ to earth to provide salvation by his life, death, resurrection, and ascension.
Amillennialism
The view that there will be no literal thousand-year bodily reign of Christ on earth prior to the final judgement and eternal state; on this view, scriptural references to the millennium in Revelation 2 actually describe the present church age.
Annihilationism
The belief that all the wicked will be judged by God and thrown into the lake of fire, where they will cease to exist.
Antichrist
“Against Christ”. The “man of lawlessness who will appear prior to the second coming of Christ and will cause great suffering and persecution, only to be destroyed by Jesus. The term is also used to describe other figures who embody such an opposition to Christ and are precursors of the final antichrist.
Apostasy
Refers to those who fall away from belief in God.
Consummation
Generally refers to either the completion of an era of God’s working in history or the absolute completion of history (the final consummation).
Damnation
Synonym for final judgement. The eternal condemnation of God on those who, because of their sinfulness, will not enter God’s eternal kingdom but will suffer the eternal consequences of separation from God.
Day of the Lord
A biblical phrase prevalent among the OT prophets who pointed to a future event during which God would visit judgement on Israel or the world.
Death
This the consequence of sin; separation from God.
Eschaton
“Last” referring to the ultimate climax or end of history wherein Christ returns to the earth to establish his eternal kingdom of righteousness and justice among all the nations.
Eschatology
The theological study of last things.
Eternal
The characteristic that describes how God has no beginning, end, or succession of moments in His own being, and sees all time equally vividly, yet sees events in time and acts in time.
Eternity
In the absolute sense, eternity is the realm in which there is no beginning and no end.
Glorification
the last stage in the application of salvation, namely, the resurrection of the body at the second coming of Jesus Christ and the entrance into the eternal kingdom of God.
Hope
The expectation of the believer that God will fulfill promises made in the past.
Imminence
The possibility of Christ’s second coming occurring at any moment.
Immortality
The inability to cease to exist or the ability to exist eternally.
Judgement
God’s evaluation as to the rightness or wrongness of an act of a creature, whether human or angelic, using the standard of God’s own righteous and holy character.
Justice
The practice of giving reward or punishment for what is rightly due to a person or group of people.
Millennium
The thousand year reign of Christ (Rev 20.1-8).
Parousia
A Greek word used to refer to the second coming of Jesus Christ at the end of history.
Physical Death
Separation of the soul from the body; a disruption of man’s being.
Postmillennialism
The view that Christ’s second coming will follow the millennium.
Premillennialism
The view that the millennium follows the return of Christ.
Rapture
the belief that the church will be caught up and united with Christ at his second coming.
Resurrection
A rising from the dead into a new life not subject to sickness, aging, deterioration, death, or any other effect of sin.
Second Death
The endless period of punishment and separation from the presence of God, the finalization of the lost state of the individual who is spiritually dead at the time of physical death.
Soul
The spiritual nature, life, being, or essence of the individual human often thought to survive after death.
Spiritual Death
Separation of the soul from God; a disruption of man’s normal relationship to his/her Creator.
Tribulation
The suffering of God’s people which, according to the NT teaching, followers of Jesus Christ are to expect as a matter of course, most intensely during Jacob’s Trouble.
