Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)
the cell's energy currency
Cellular respiration
Glucose is broken down into carbon dioxide. This releases electrons and hydrogen ions which are "carried" by NAD+
Glycolysis
An anaerobic process that occurs in the cytoplasm
Aerobic Process
Requires oxygen that occurs in the mitochondria and produces 34-38 ATP
Fermentation
a way to recycle the NADH that is produced during glycolysis back to NAD+ in the absence of oxygen
Alcoholic Fermentation
produces carbon dioxide and ethanol as byproducts. Allows a cell to continue to produce ATP and meet its energy needs when oxygen is no longer available
C3H4O3
Pyruvate formula
C3H5OH
Ethanol formula
C6H12O6 → 2C3H4O3 + 2 net ATP + 2 NADH
Glycolysis formula
2C3H5OH + 2CO2 + 2 NAD+ + 2 H+
Fermentation formula
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → ATP + 6CO2 + 6H2O
Cellular respiration formula
Corn syrup, table sugar, artificial sweetener
