Criterion Variable
The dependent variable that we are trying to predict in a correlational study.
Predictor Variable
The independent variable, typically represented on the x-axis, used to predict the criterion variable.
Scatterplot
A graph that displays the relationship between two variables; used to visually assess correlations.
Positive Relationship
A relationship where an increase in one variable corresponds with an increase in another variable.
Negative Relationship
A relationship where an increase in one variable corresponds with a decrease in another variable.
Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC)
A statistic that measures the strength and direction of the linear relationship between two variables.
Coefficient of Determination (r²)
The proportion of variability in one variable that can be explained by its relationship with another variable.
Standard Error of Estimate (SEE)
A measure of the accuracy of predictions made with a regression line.
Residuals
The differences between observed values and predicted values in a regression analysis.
Hypothesis Testing
A method to determine whether there is a statistically significant relationship between two variables.
