Positioning AP
Detector placed under posterior aspect of thigh to include HIP AND KNEE JOINTS
Patient lies supine
Legs extended
If no fracture is suspected, the leg is rotated to centralise the patella over the distal femur
Centering and beam direction
Mid shaft femur
Vertical
Lateral positioning
Detector placed underneath lateral aspect of thigh
From AP position, patient turns onto affected side with affected knee slightly bent
Pelvis bent back to separate legs, with the unaffected leg behind the affected leg
The leg is adjusted do that the femoral condoles are superimposed
