Nullification Crisis
States can refuse to ratify / enforce US Congress bills and laws. Tariff of 1828 was very unpopular in the South, so VP Calhoun wanted to nullify it. Southerners wanted to nullify it also, Jackson refused, and the South threatened to secede if not.
