Broadcloth

A twilled, napped, woolen, or worsted fabric with a smooth lustrous face and dense texture; a fabric usually made of cotton, silk, or rayon woven in a plain or rib weave with a soft semi-gloss finish

Brushed Finish

Bare metal is scratched w/ abrasive material & then finished until a smooth high gloss is obtained.

Corrugated Container

A container used to hold a dead human body which is constructed out of a type of cardboard, which is made with a series of alternate folds & ridges.

Crepe

A thin crinkled cloth of silk, rayon, cotton, or wool.

Crinkled Finish

An exterior casket finish in which the metal is coated w/ a substance that wrinkles as it dries; usually used on less expensive caskets.

Doeskin (Moleskin)

A heavy durable cotton fabric w/ a short (1/8 th inch or less), thick, velvety nap on one side; woven cloth w/ suede-like appearance.

Elliptic

A casket having ends in the shape of a half-circle.

Embossed

A casket finish that features a raised design or pattern embossed onto the surface, often enhancing its aesthetic appeal.

Engineered Wood

A range of derivative wood products which are manufactured by binding together wood strands, particles, fibers, or veneers w/ adhesives to form composite materials that are used in casket construction.

Fiberglass

A material consisting of extremely fine filaments of glass embedded in various resins.

Flaring Square

A casket style characterized by sides that slope outward slightly from the bottom to the top, providing a wider appearance at the top.

Flat Finish (Matte Finish)

A finish used on casket exteriors that is free of gloss; dull lusterless surface; no shine or gloss

Hammertone Finish

A sprayed finish that has the appearance of small indentations in the metal (as if struck by ball-pen hammer); usually found on inexpensive caskets.

Hermetically Sealed

Airtight; impervious to external influence; completely sealed by fusion or soldering.

Octagon

A casket having 8 angles or corners & therefore has 8 sides or body panels.

Plastic Extrusion Molding

A method of molding plastic by injecting molten plastic into a die.

Plated Finish

The finish created when the base metal is coated by another metal via an electrolytic process; often found on casket hardware; in casket construction is identified as ‘deposit’ as in ‘copper deposit’

Plush

A woven cloth w/ a nap exceeding 1/8th inch

Polished Finish

A surface made smooth & glossy usually by friction; brought to a highly developed, finished, or refined state; burnished.

Polymer

A compound, similar in appearance to plastic, that has high molecular weight creating an extremely durable substance.

Priest Casket (Slip Panel)

A casket opening style in which the cap or lid at the head end of the casket is completely removed for viewing: the remains may be viewed from either side of casket.

Rental Casket

A casket which is used as a temporary receptacle for the dead human remains for the purpose of visitation & funeral w/ intention that the remains will be placed in another suitable container for permanent disposition

Satin Finish

A type of semi-luster or semi-gloss casket finish that is smooth w/ well-defined fine lines or striations

Semi-gloss Finish

A low luster finish

Single Hinged Panel

A casket in which the cap is in 2 pieces, the rim (ogee) & foot panel is 1 piece which is hinged to the top body molding &the head panel being the second piece which is hinged to the rim (ogee)

State Casket (Vertical Side Square)

Casket in which the body panels are at a 90-degree angle to the bottom & the corners form 90-degree angles

Unfinished Wood Box

An unornamented casket made of wood that does not have a fixed interior lining

Urnside

A casket design in which the body panels display the shape of an urn.

Air Seal

A method of closure that utilizes the air pressure created by placing the dome of the vault onto the base of the vault

Air Tray

A transfer container consisting of wooden tray w/ cardboard covering for the casket

Alternative Container

An unfinished wood box or other non-metal receptacle or enclosure, w/o ornamentation of fixed interior lining, which is designed for the encasement of human remains & which is made of fiberboard, pressed-wood, composition materials (w/ or w/o an outside covering) or like materials

Burial Casket

A casket that is sold for the purpose of interring or entombing w/ dead human remains

Combination Case

A transfer container consisting of a particleboard box w/ a cardboard tray & cover to satisfy air shipping regulations

Combination Unit

Any product consisting of a unit or a series of units that are designed or intended to be used together as both a casket & as a permanent burial receptacle

Concrete (sectional)

A grave liner consisting of 6 or 8 slabs of unfinished concrete placed around the casket

Cremation Casket

An environmentally safe casket that is designed for encasing dead human remains for cremation

Dome

The top of an air seal burial vault which entraps air as it is put in position: it also supports the weight of the earth above.

Double Seal

A method of closure; utilizes the principle of the air seal in conjunction with an epoxy material at the junction of the dome & the base of the vault

Grave Box

An outer enclosure consisting of a body & a one or two-piece lid

Grave Liner

An outer enclosure that offers protection from the earth load but w/o protection from the elements

Outer burial Container

Any container which is designed for placement in the grave around the casket, including but not limited to; containers commonly known as burial vaults, grave boxes, & grave liners

Top Seal

A method of closure; utilizes an epoxy compound in conjunction w/ tongue-in-groove construction at the top edge & the lid of vault

Transfer Container

An outer enclosure utilized for the protection of casketed remains during transportation

Urn

A container for cremated remains; a vase w/ afoot or pedestal

Urn Vault

Metal or concrete vault for urns

Vault

An outer enclosure that offers protection from the earth load as well as possessing sealing qualities

Wood Box

A transfer container made entirely of wood

Ziegler Case (Metal Case)

A gasketed-sealed container that can be used as an insert into a casket or as a separate shipping container
