What is a population in statistics?
Collection of persons, things, or objects under study.
Give an example of a population.
All students at LMC (e.g., if LMC has all the students, then all students are population)
What is a sample in statistics?
A portion or subset of the larger population.
Give an example of a sample.
200 students randomly selected from LMC.
How is statistics defined?
The science of collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data.
What is a population?
The entire group that you want to study.
What is a sample?
A subset of the population.
What is a parameter?
A numerical description of a population.
What is a statistic?
A numerical description of a sample.
What are descriptive statistics?
Organization, summarization, and display of data.
What are inferential statistics?
Drawing conclusions based on evidence and reasoning; uses probability to interpret data.
What is inference?
A conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning.
In the example of salaries of a Major League Baseball team, what is the population?
Major League Baseball team. Data collected from each member.
In the example of a survey of 300 people from an auditorium with 13,000 people, what is the population?
Auditorium with 13,000 people. Surveying only 300 people.
Define qualitative data.
Describes or categorizes attributes.
Define quantitative data.
Counts or measures attributes.
What type of data is qualitative data?
Non-numerical.
What type of data is quantitative data?
Numerical.
Give examples of qualitative data.
Hair color, blood type, car model.
Give examples of quantitative data.
Pulse rate, weight, salary.
What is a population parameter?
Numerical value representing a population.
What is a sample statistic?
Numerical value representing a sample.
Why are Jersey Numbers an example of qualitative data?
Describes, not counted or measured.
What is quantitative data?
Data is numerical and can be measured.
What is qualitative data?
Data is descriptive and cannot be measured.
What is discrete data?
Consists of counting numbers (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.).
What is continuous data?
Includes decimals or fractions.
