Bible
A collection of sacred books revealing God’s relationship with humanity.
Old Testament
The portion of the Bible that deals with the period before Jesus.
New Testament
The portion of the Bible that deals with the period after Jesus.
Literal Sense
Understanding what the text actually says.
Moral Sense
Understanding what the text teaches us about how to live.
Allegorical Sense
Understanding how the text points to Jesus or deeper spiritual truths.
Anagogical Sense
Understanding what the text says about Heaven or our final destiny.
Yahwist Source
Uses 'Yahweh' for God; characterized by a vivid, earthy writing style.
Elohist Source
Uses 'Elohim'; focuses on prophecy and angels.
Deuteronomist Source
Includes moral codes, laws, and sermons.
Priestly Source
Focuses on worship, genealogy, order, and rituals.
Catholic Old Testament
Contains 46 books, including 7 deuterocanonical books.
Tanakh
The Jewish Bible, which contains only 39 books.
Deuterocanonical Canon
Books accepted by Catholics but not by Protestants or Jews.

The Writings section in the Hebrew scriptures.

Hebrew word meaning 'In the beginning.'
