What is deforestation?

The cutting down of a large number of trees in the same area to use the land for something else.

Why does deforestation happen in tropical areas?

To provide land for cattle and rice fields, and to grow crops such as sugarcane or maize for biofuels.

What happens when trees are burned during deforestation?

Carbon stored in trees is released as CO₂, contributing to global warming.

How does decomposition after deforestation release CO₂?

Microorganisms decompose dead vegetation and respire, releasing CO₂.

Why does deforestation reduce CO₂ absorption?

Fewer trees means less photosynthesis, so less CO₂ is taken in.

How does deforestation affect habitats and biodiversity?

It reduces the number of habitats, decreasing biodiversity.
