transpiration
evaporation of water from the walls of mesophyll cells followed by diffusion of water vapour through the stomata to the atmosphere
high temperatures
increases transpiration…water molecules have more kinetic energy so evaporation and diffusion occur faster
high humidity
decreases transpiration…water potential is less steep so water diffuses slowly
high wind speed
increases transpiration…moving air carries water vapour maintaining water potential
high light intensity
may increase transpiration…plant will photosynthesis rapidly needing more CO2 so stomata open and water vapour diffuses more rapidly
potometer
measures the rate of water uptake
