Stoichiometry
The relationship between various amounts of reactants and products in a chemical reaction.
Law of Conservation of Mass
During a chemical reaction, the total mass of reactants must equal the total mass of products.
Balanced Chemical Equation
An expression showing that the numbers of atoms of each element are equal on both sides.
Coefficients
Numbers placed in front of the compounds to balance a chemical equation.
Limiting Reactant
The reactant that is completely consumed in a chemical reaction, limiting the amount of product formed.
Excess Reactant
The reactant that remains after the limiting reactant is completely consumed.
Empirical Formula
The simplest whole number ratio of elements in a compound.
Molecular Mass
The sum of the atomic masses of all atoms in a molecule.
Percent Yield
The ratio of the actual yield of product to the theoretical yield, expressed as a percentage.
Combustion Analysis
A method used to determine the empirical formula of a compound through combustion in excess oxygen.
