Radiography
A specialty within the field of radiologic technology
What are the people called who take the x-rays?
Radiographers, medical imaging professionals, x-ray techs
How do we get images
By using x-rays and digital image receptors
To become an RT, you must
Pass a national board exam.
What other things does an RT do?
surgery
Trauma
Fluoroscopy
Work with almost every patient in/out of the hospital
Code of Ethics
standardize the practices.
Accreditation
process of external quality control
JRCERT
The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology, which evaluates and gives accreditation to radiography programs.
AIDET
An oral communication tool utilized by hospitals which stands for A=acknowledge, I=introduce, D=duration, E=explanation, T=thank you.
Principles of Radiation Biology & Radiation Protection
A course that teaches how radiation interacts with body cells and how to protect patients during radiographic procedures.
ALARA
An acronym for 'As Low As Reasonably Achievable,' a principle aimed at minimizing patient radiation exposure.
Pathology
A course that investigates the causes, signs, and symptoms related to various diseases and the primary methods of diagnosis.
Cognitive Learning
A type of learning that involves acquiring knowledge through classroom lectures and demonstrations of radiographic theories.
Competency-based exam
An evaluation performed by students to demonstrate their confidence and ability in performing radiographic exams.
We meet
Other professionals from different backgrounds daily
We must know
How to use our equipment properly and troubleshoot it when it is not working. To do this, we must understand the physics of the equipment
To ensure that we do our job correctly,
It is imperative that we can effectively communicate with our patients in all situations
The three parts of communication
Empathetic
Considerate
Professional
Communication involves:
Verbal/oral
Nonverbal
Sometimes other means (translator, communication tools, etc)
Institutional Accreditation
Assesses overall quality and integrity of an institution
Programmatic
Addresses educational endeavors at program level.
TJC
The Joint Commission, Which evaluates and gives accreditation to hospitals
How does MSU maintain accreditation
Program self study:
. Acceptance rate
. Completion rate
. Board passage rate
. Employment rate
Site visit
JRCERT Visits both the school and clinic sites interviewing technologists and students
Maintaining adherence to standards
Interim report
What happens if a program doesnt maintain standards?
Failure to comply with established requirements
A program will be placed on probation
Programs must have reporting mechanisms in place
Attempt to resolve prior to canceling accreditation
Have to make sure that programs are meeting both industry standards and academic standards
Value of JRCERT Accreditation (EPSAC)
Ensures acceptable educational quality as defined by the profession
Public assurance that graduates. met minimum level of competency
Students can perform procedures aren't needing established professional standards
Assurance to students they will meet expectations of employers nationwide
Continuing improvement of program
There is nothing that will replace having the _____ necessary to perform our job as X ray technologists.
knowledge
What other responsibilities in health care (CEE)
Confidence
Effectiveness
Efficiency- Course content, clinical content, ARST radiography curriculum
Radiography curriculum.
Written by ARST
Comprised of industry educators
Introduction to radiologic sciences
Introduce selected concepts and theories upon which the profession of radiologic sciences is based
Clinical education
Introduce the student to the radiographers role and function in the practice of radiography
RSCI Courses
Principles of diagnostic imaging and equipment
These courses introduce students to the digital image. acquisition and equipment utilize in X ray
How to use the equipment
How the equipment works
Human structure and function.
Designed to instruct you on anatomy and physiology
Medical terminology
Common terminology in the field of Medicine
Radiographic positioning and procedures.
Instructs a student on how to image an area of the body
Teach us a student the routine procedures for imaging
Radiographic image evaluation and production.
Designed to instruct students on how to produce optimal radiographs
You must:
Minimize a patient's exposure to radiation
Provide the physician with best quality radiographs
Contain health care costs
You do these by
Knowing proper procedures
Knowing proper imaging techniques
Knowing imaging regulations
Pathology
The course will investigate the etiology, signs and systems of the primary method of diagnosis.
Patient care
Course focus on providing care to a patient
We cover:
How to transfer patient to and from different areas of the hospital
How to administer contrast to patients
Empathetic care to patients
Venipuncture in patient care
Forms of communication with patients to have effective communication skills
Imaging technology and image acquisition
Designed to teach the radiography student the x-ray circuit, tube, and how X rays are produced and displayed
Classroom/didactic experience
Utilized to instruct students on how to perform imaging procedures utilizing didactic education
Lab setting
We utilize lab phantoms to produce images for procedures
You will perform “lab check-off”
These are utilized to make sure you are ready to go to a hospital setting for clinical.
Clinical Participation - Cognitive Learning
Refers to classroom lectures and demonstrations of radiographic theories.
To go to clinic you must have a certain body of knowledge to be successful. Once completed you’ll be able to go to a clinical assignment.
Affective learning
Involves attitudes, values, and feelings.
Clinical setting gives you an opportunity to develop interpersonal relationship skills, moral & ethical beliefs for daily practices.
Psychomotor Learning
Actual hands on phase or application phase of imaging science
Passive participation
Observing practicing technologist while performing exams
Active participation
Perform various tasks to become familiar with them.
Perform exams with students
Continuing Education Requirement
Mandatory by ARRT
24 CE credits per biennium or pass an additional certification examination
Every 10 years perform self-assessment
