Component of a nucleotide
Phosphate group, nitrogenous base, and pentose (5-carbon sugar)
Nucleotide
The monomers of nucleic acids.
Polynucleotide
A polymer of nucleotides.
Sugar-phosphate backbone
Formed by covalent bonds between nucleotides.
DNA
Contains the nitrogenous base thymine (A, C, T, G)
A sample of DNA contains 20% adenine. What percentage of guanine does it contain?
30%
Briefly describe the semiconservative model for DNA replication.
The two DNA strands separate. Each strand then becomes a template for the assembly of a complementary strand from a supply of free nucleotides. Each new DNA helix has one old strand with one new strand.
DNA Polymerase
Add nucleotides only to the 3′ end of the strand, never to the 5′ end.
DNA Ligase
Links (or ligates) the pieces together into a single DNA strand.
Origin of Replication
Replication of a DNA molecule begins at particular sites called ______________, short stretches of DNA having a specific sequence of nucleotides.
Replication bubble
Areas being replicated.
