War of the Roses
A civil war between to powerful noble families in a bid to win the throne. House of York - white rose and House of Lancaster - red rose. 1455 to 1485. Ended when Henry Tudor became King.
Henry VII’s early life
Fled England at 14 for Brittany where he was looked after by his uncle Jasper Tudor. Gained political experience in French courts and had training necessary to become King. Henry’s mother was Margaret Beaufort who was in England.
Battle of Bosworth
Henry launched an attack on Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth (August 1485) Sir William Stanley half way through the battle chose to help Henry’s side allowing for victory and Richard was killed. Henry was then crowned as King on the battlefield.
Henry VII’s claim to the throne
Weak claim through his mother, seen as even weaker as it was through females. Indirect lineage from John of Gaunt. House of Lancaster.
