What are domestic laws?
Being a law-abiding citizen of one’s country
We all live in communities and are expected to abide by the laws of that community
If you break a domestic law, you will be dealt with by the country’s legal system
What is international law?
Sets standards of acceptable behaviour for nations and their citizens for issues that cross borders
fosters good reliationships
Mainly developed from treaties and conventions between countries
What is a ‘treaty’?
Form of contract between two parties (two countries or international organisations) e.g. The Charter of the United Nations
What is the United Nations and what do they do?
International government that establishes and enforces international laws.
Uses International Court of Justice
Uses UN peacekeepers (part of the UN Security Council)
What is the role of UN peacekeepers?
Enforce international law
When disputes relating to international law turn to conflict, peacekeepers help support countries in making the transition from conflict ➡ peace
