Habituation

The tendency to stop responding or to decrease responsiveness when exposed to repeated stimulation.

Sensitization

An increase in responsiveness to a stimulus after repeated stimulation.

Dis-habituation

The re-emergence of a response after a novel stimulus is introduced following habituation.

Generalization (in learning)

The extent to which a particular behavior or response is elicited by similar stimuli.

Long-term Habituation

A slow build-up of habituation that lasts a long time once established.

Short-term Sensitization

A fast build-up of sensitization that is quick to extinguish.

Non-associative learning

A type of learning that involves changes in response to stimuli without the need for associations or rewards.

Low-intensity stimuli

Stimuli that tend to habituate and are often not dangerous.

High-intensity stimuli

Stimuli that tend to sensitize and are generally associated with danger.

Adaptation value

The benefit of a behavioral change that enhances survival or well-being in response to environmental stimuli.
