What is Porosity?
The amount of open space in a rock
What is Permeability?
The ability to transport water through the interconnections of pores in a rock
What is the water table?
It marks the boundary between the unsaturated zones, where soil and rock pores are completely filled with groundwater.
What are the speed rates of groundwater flow?
They are extremely slow compared to oceans and rivers.
What are the effects of pumping ground water?
It effects the water table, developing a cone of depression around the well.
What is an artesian well?
Ground water flowing to the surface naturally without pumping because it’s under pressure within a confined aquifer.
Why is most groundwater extracted?
Most groundwater is extracted for irrigation.
What is a problem within coastlines of groundwater?
It creates salty water near coastlines and islands.
What is Flowed Reversal?
When the natural direction of groundwater movement changes.
What is Land Subsidence?
Lowering of ground elevation caused by human processes of compacting or removing underground materials.
What is the main cause of contamination in groundwater?
Human activities such as agricultural runoff, industrial waste disposal, leaking landfills, and sewage leaks.
How does groundwater relate to abandoned gas stations?
When stations are abandoned, tanks may corrode, crack, or be improperly sealed. This allows fuel and chemicals to seep into surrounding soil.
