New cards

efficiency

index of productivity, measured by how much can be gained with a minimum of expense time and effort

2
New cards

efficacy

likelihood of benefit from a given treatment for a defined population under ideal conditions

3
New cards

effectiveness

liklehood of benefit of treatment from an individual under average conditons

4
New cards

outcomes

index of change that occurs as a result of time, intervention, or both

5
New cards

restitutive

is based on the principle of brain plasticity that refers to the ability of the brain to modify structure and function following changes in the body or in external environment.

6
New cards

what is the treatment approach that involves environmental modifications or behavioral strategies designed to bypass problematic difficulties in the area of speech, language, or cognition.

compensatory

This patient is one year post stroke. At the time of the stroke the patient had moderate word finding difficutlties and experienced more difficulty weith unfamiliar conversational partners. The patient underwent a dosage of treatment that focused word finding difficulties and communicating with both familiar and unfamiliar partners. The patient underwent an intense dose of treatment and reevaluation. The patient demonstrates skills equivalent to their abilities prior to their stroke. Therefore, treatment resulted in revcovering previous skills in speech/language. Which type of treatment did the patient recieve?

a. restorative

8
New cards

The clinician has to report to the insurance provider the number of sessions they are recommending along with the frequency and duration of the treatment. They are reporting on the:

d. intensity

9
New cards

restorative treatment is sometimes called restitutive or stimulation approach

true

10
New cards

the clinician states the client will be seen for 16 sessions. 2 times a week for 60 mins per session over 80 days. this is considered?

c. treatment dosage

11
New cards

the term where areas of the brain are not centrally involved in certain functions prior to injury take over those functions

a. cortical reorganization

12
New cards

the term which relates to how functions associated with the brain structures remote from the area of damage that were initially impaired over time is

d. resolution of diaschisis

13
New cards

which term relates to the process of the compression of surrounding brain tissue being reduced as a result of swelling going down?

reduction of edema

14
New cards

Good nutrition, solid rest, strong social support and avoidance of negative substances contribute to better quality of life but do not faciliate brain changes

FALSE

15
New cards

The primary components of evidence-based practice involve the essential integration and interaction of: (choose as many as possible)

a. clinician traits

b. research evidence

c. person traits

16
New cards

Research Evidence

Research evidence consists of empirical data and findings derived from peer-reviewed studies and systematic reviews that scientifically demonstrate the efficacy, effectiveness, and efficiency of particular treatment methods.

17
New cards

Environmental Factors

Environmental factors refer to the external conditions or contexts in which the individual lives, interacts, and communicates, including family support, societal and cultural influences, healthcare systems, and available resources

18
New cards

Person Traits

Person traits are individual characteristics such as motivation, perceived social support, personality, cultural background, severity and type of impairment, cognitive-linguistic profile, health status, emotional state, and presence of other disabilities.

19

Clinician Traits

Clinician traits include professional competencies, clinical skills, theoretical knowledge, experience, attitudes, interpersonal style, confidence, communication abilities, biases, preferences, and the capacity to form strong therapeutic alliances.
The clinician's ability to blend scientific knowledge with interpersonal skills, adapt treatment approaches to fit specific clinical situations, and foster a strong therapeutic alliance significantly impacts treatment outcomes. Skilled clinicians effectively translate evidence-based methods into practice-based successes by sensitively responding to individual differences and real-world complexities

Constraint-Induced Therapy (CIT)

Constraint-Induced Therapy (CIT) is a rehabilitative technique originally designed for motor impairments, particularly hemiparalysis or hemiparesis resulting from neurological injuries. CIT involves restricting an individual's use of their intact limb or function, forcing increased reliance and intensive practice on the impaired limb. This intensive practice promotes neuroplasticity and can significantly enhance motor functioning in the impaired limb. The theoretical underpinning of CIT is to overcome learned non-use and stimulate neural reorganization through forced use of the impaired function.

Constraint-Induced Language Therapy (CILT)

Constraint-Induced Language Therapy (CILT) is an adaptation of the principles behind CIT, applied specifically to language rehabilitation. The primary rationale behind CILT is to encourage individuals to actively use language modalities that are impaired, thereby maximizing language recovery and neural reorganization in these impaired language modalities. Like CIT, CILT restricts or limits the use of intact or compensatory language abilities to facilitate intense practice and engagement with impaired language functions. However, it is important to note that while CILT emphasizes intensive use of impaired modalities, there is no credible evidence to suggest that using supported communication strategies across multiple modalities negatively affects recovery of the impaired modalities. In fact, failing to address communication needs across all modalities is considered unethical, especially in the early stages of recovery.

Personal health status, fatigue, motivation, and well-being.

Level of social support from family, friends, or caregivers.

Environmental factors (e.g., accessibility to transportation, financial constraints).

The perceived relevance and immediate practical value of therapy tasks to the individual's daily life
