sound waves are caused by
vibrating objects
speaker example starting point first …
the paper diaphragm vibrates back and forth
this vibration of the speaker causes air to vibrate and create
oscillations and rarefactions - a sound wave
the sound wave travels as
a series of oscillations and rarefactions
when a sound wave hits an object what to the air particles put on solid
pressure
the pressure causes
the solid particles closest to impact to vibrate
once the first few solid particles vibrate
it carries through the whole structure
this proccess is faster in a solid than liquid or gas as
in a solid the particles are closer together so the vibrations pass through easier
in a gas the particles are more spread out so the vibrations have to travel a further distance to get to all of them
sound waves cannot pass through space as
space is a vacuum there is no particles to move or vibrate
