Persevere (APT Model)
Definition: To continue steadfastly and remain determined despite difficulties or obstacles.
Example: Someone who keeps practicing piano every day even though it is difficult at first is persevering.
Emotional Dysregulation
Definition: Difficulty controlling or managing emotional responses and behaviors when faced with certain situations.
Example: A person who quickly becomes extremely angry or upset over small problems and struggles to calm down may be experiencing this.
Dialectic
Definition: A _____ is the synthesis of two opposites. It means that two ideas or experiences that seem like opposites can both be true at the same time.
Example: Someone can feel angry at their friend for hurting them while also still caring about and loving that friend.
Moral Licensing
refers to the tendency for people who have done something morally good to later feel justified doing something morally questionable because they believe they have already proven they are a "good person."
Example: A person who donates money to charity might later feel less guilty about lying to avoid getting in trouble at work, because they think their good action makes up for it.
Imposter Syndrome
is the feeling that you have not truly earned your success and that you only achieved it because of luck. People experiencing this often feel like a fraud and worry others will realize they are not as capable as they appear.
Example: A student who gets accepted into a competitive university program might think, "I don't really belong here. I just got lucky, and everyone else is smarter than me."
Resilience
Definition: The ability to withstand or recover from significant challenges that threaten stability, well-being, or development.
Example: A student who fails an important exam but studies harder and improves on the next one is demonstrating resilience.
APT Model
Definition: A framework describing three ways people can respond to adversity: adapting to change, continuing with determination despite difficulty, or growing and flourishing after challenges.
Example: After losing a job, a person adjusts to a new career path, keeps working toward their goals, and eventually finds a job they enjoy even more.
Adapt (APT Model)
Definition: To become adjusted to new conditions or changes in the environment.
Example: A student who switches to online classes and changes their study routine is adapting to a new learning environment.
Thrive (APT Model)
Definition: To prosper, grow, or flourish, often after overcoming challenges.
Example: A person who moves to a new city, builds strong friendships, and succeeds in their career is thriving.
Prefrontal Cortex
Definition: A brain region involved in complex cognitive processes such as planning, decision-making, emotional regulation, and behavioral control.
Example: When someone pauses to think before reacting in anger, they are using this brain region to regulate their response.
Mindfulness
Definition: Paying attention intentionally to the present moment in a nonjudgmental way.
Example: During meditation, a person focuses on their breathing and notices their thoughts without reacting to them.
Reasonable Mind
Definition: Thinking and acting based on logic, facts, and reasoning without influence from emotion.
Example: A person carefully compares prices and reviews before buying a laptop.
Wise Mind
Definition: The balanced integration of logical thinking and emotional awareness that allows thoughtful and effective decision-making.
Example: Someone who acknowledges they feel hurt but calmly discusses the issue with a friend.
Emotional Mind
Definition: Thinking and acting primarily based on intense emotions while ignoring logic or facts.
Example: A person who sends an angry text immediately after an argument without thinking about the consequences.
Emotion-Provoking
Definition: Something that stimulates or gives rise to emotions, often strong or uncomfortable ones.
Example: Watching a sad movie scene about loss may bring up feelings of sadness or grief.
Distress Tolerance
Definition: The ability to experience negative emotions without feeling overwhelmed or believing they are unbearable.
Example: Someone who uses deep breathing or takes a short walk instead of reacting impulsively during an argument is demonstrating distress tolerance.
Amygdala Hijack
Definition: A process in which intense emotions take over and interfere with rational, logical thinking.
Example: A person who yells in anger during a heated argument and later regrets it experienced this process.
Crisis Survival Skills
Definition: Strategies used to get through a short-term crisis without making the situation worse by acting on intense emotions.
Example: Instead of sending an angry message while upset, someone distracts themselves by listening to music or calling a friend until they calm down.
Willpower
Definition: The ability to control attention, emotions, and impulses in order to achieve long-term goals rather than immediate gratification.
