What ae the types of mutations ?
addition
deletion
substitution
inversion
duplication
translocation of bases
what is substitution mutation ?
where one or more bases are swapped for another
can result in silent mutation (no change)
what are inversion mutation ?
where a sequence of bases is reversed
can cause silent mutation
what is insertion/ addition mutation ?
one ore more bases are added, this causes a frame shift
what is deletion mutation ?
one or more bases are removes, this causes a frame shift
what is duplication mutation ?
one or more bases are repeated, this will cause a frame shift but could also result in increasing repeating subunits & cause genetic diseases
what is translocation mutation ?
a sequence of bases is moved from one location in the genome to another
this could be movement within the same chromosome or to a different chromosomes
how to increase the rate of mutations ?
mutagenic agents
what is a mutation ?
a change in the sequence of base pairs in a DNA molecule that may result in an alterned polypeptide
