The theory of the 4 humours after carefully observing and recording the symptoms of patients
How did Galen extend the theory of the 4 humours
By suggesting that the humours should be rebalanced by using the theory of opposites
Give an example of the theory of opposites
Galen suggested too much phlegm was caused by cold and so he used hot chillis and peppers to rebalance the humour
Galen and the church
Galen believed in the idea of the soul, which fitted into the teachings of the church. This led to the church promoting the ideas of Galen, and doctors widely using the theory of the four humours throughout this period
