What is the longest and strongest bone in the body?
The femur.
What is the primary function of the femur?
It transfers the entire weight of the body through its joints.
What are common sources of pathology related to the femur?
The joints at each end of the femur, especially after trauma.
What are the four essential parts of the proximal femur?
Head, neck, greater trochanter, and lesser trochanter.
What is the fovea capitis?
A depression near the center of the femur's head for ligament attachment.
What is the role of the ligament capitis femoris?
It attaches to the head of the femur.
Where is the greater trochanter located?
Superiorly and laterally to the femoral shaft.
What is the intertrochanteric crest?
A thick ridge that joins the greater and lesser trochanters posteriorly.
What is the significance of the 15° to 20° anterior angle of the femur?
It's important for radiographic positioning to align the femoral neck with the image receptor.
What bones comprise the complete pelvis?
Two hip bones, one sacrum, and one coccyx.
What joint is formed between the sacrum and the fifth lumbar vertebra?
The lumbosacral joint (L5-S1 joint).
What are the three divisions of each hip bone?
Ilium, ischium, and pubis.
What is the acetabulum?
A deep, cup-shaped cavity that accepts the head of the femur to form the hip joint.
What is the iliac crest?
The superior margin of the ala of the ilium.
What is the ischial tuberosity?
A rounded roughened area near the junction of the lower body and inferior rami of the ischium.
What is the greater sciatic notch?
A deep notch located directly superior to the ischial spine.
What is the symphysis pubis?
An amphiarthrodial joint formed by the meeting of the superior rami of the pubis.
What is the obturator foramen?
The largest foramen in the human skeletal system, formed by the ramus and body of the ischium and pubis.
What distinguishes the true pelvis from the false pelvis?
The true pelvis is completely surrounded by bony structures, while the false pelvis is not.
What is the pelvic brim?
The plane that divides the pelvic area into the greater (false) and lesser (true) pelvis.
What is the pelvic ring?
A sturdy, ring-like structure formed by the ilium, ischium, pubic bones, sacrum, and coccyx.
How does the female pelvis differ from the male pelvis?
The female pelvis is wider and shallower, while the male pelvis is narrower and deeper.
What is the shape of the pelvic inlet in females?
Round.
What is the shape of the pelvic inlet in males?
Heart-shaped.
What is the significance of the true pelvis during childbirth?
It forms the actual birth canal.
What is the outlet of the true pelvis defined by?
The two ischial tuberosities and the tip of the coccyx.
What are the two notches associated with the ischial spine?
Greater sciatic notch (superior) and lesser sciatic notch (inferior).
