Microbial intoxications
Diseases caused by toxins produced by microbes.
Infectious diseases
Diseases caused by pathogens following colonization of some body site by the pathogen.
Dermatitis
General skin inflammation due to allergy or irritants.
Folliculitis
Infected hair follicle.
Sty/Stye
Infection of an eyelash follicle or an associated sebaceous (oil) gland at the edge of the eyelid.
Furuncle
Deeper, pus-filled folliculitis (boil).
Carbuncle
Group of furuncles together.
Otitis media
Infection of the middle ear.
Otitis externa
Infection of the outer ear canal.
Conjunctivitis
Inflammation of the conjunctiva.
Keratitis
Inflammation of the cornea.
Keratoconjunctivitis
Inflammation of both the cornea and the conjunctiva at the same time.
Retinitis
Inflammation of the retina.
Pharyngitis
Inflammation of the pharynx (sore throat).
Pneumonia
Infection of the lungs.
Sinusitis
Inflammation of the sinuses.
Bronchitis
Inflammation of the bronchi.
Bronchopneumonia
Infection of the bronchi and the alveoli.
Epiglottitis
Inflammation of the epiglottis.
Laryngitis
Inflammation of the larynx (voice box).
Dental caries
Tooth decay caused by bacterial destruction of the tooth enamel and dentin.
Periodontal diseases
Diseases that affect the structures around the teeth (gums, periodontal ligament, and bone)
Gingivitis
Inflammation of the gums (gingiva).
Periodontitis
Serious gum infection that damages soft tissue and destroys the bone supporting the teeth.
Trench mouth
Severe form of gingivitis with painful, bleeding gums, ulcerations, and foul breath (acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis - ANUG).
Colitis
Inflammation of the colon (large intestine).
Dysentery
Severe diarrhea with blood and mucus in the stool.
Enteritis
Inflammation of the small intestine.
Gastritis
Inflammation of the stomach lining.
Gastroenteritis
Inflammation of both the stomach and intestines (usually the small intestine).
Hepatitis
Inflammation of the liver.
Cystitis
Inflammation of the urinary bladder.
Nephritis
Inflammation of the kidneys.
Ureteritis
Inflammation of the ureters.
Urethritis
Inflammation of the urethra.
Prostatitis
Inflammation of the prostate gland.
Pyelonephritis
Infection and inflammation of the kidney tissue and renal pelvis.
Bartholinitis
Inflammation of the Bartholin’s glands (small glands near the vaginal opening).
Cervicitis
Inflammation of the cervix (the lower part of the uterus).
Endometritis
Inflammation of the endometrium (inner lining of the uterus).
Vaginitis
Inflammation of the vagina.
Vulvovaginitis
Inflammation of both the vulva and the vagina.
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
Serious infection of the female reproductive organs (uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries).
Epididymitis
Inflammation of the epididymis (tube at the back of the testicle that stores and carries sperm).
Endocarditis
Inflammation of the endocardium (the inner lining of the heart, including heart valves).
Myocarditis
Inflammation of the myocardium (heart muscle).
Pericarditis
Inflammation of the pericardium (the sac surrounding the heart).
Lymphadenitis
Inflammation of the lymph nodes.
Lymphadenopathy
Disease or swelling of the lymph nodes (general term).
Lymphangitis
Inflammation of the lymphatic vessels.
Encephalitis
Inflammation of the brain.
Encephalomyelitis
Inflammation of the brain and spinal cord together.
Meningitis
Inflammation of the meninges (the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord).
Meningoencephalitis
Inflammation of both the brain and the meninges.
Myelitis
Inflammation of the spinal cord.
