State Hebb’s associative learning rule. (do not put “neurons that fire together wire together)
Neurons that fire together do wire together however there are multiple factors that play out in order for this action to occur. Hebb states that our emotional response to the experience matters as well. where and when the event occurred, our level of attention and motivation during the event, and how we process these thoughts and feelings while asleep all play a factor on our ability to associate the learning rule with our brain. When two neurons fire together their synapses grow stronger.
Field’s argues that changes at the level of the synapse suffice to create memories (T/F).
False because vast changes throughout the brain are needed in order to create a memory
What is white matter in the brain and why is it white?
White matter is a tightly packed bundle of axons that are coated in a fatty substance called myelin. White matter’s purpose is to connect grey matter into circuits. They are called white because they are coated in the fatty substance that enables the brain to have a faster speed of transmission
_____________ is a fatty substance that insulates axons and speeds neural transmission by 50 to 100%.
Myelin
All types of glial cells respond to ______________ and can modify information transmission in the brain.
Neural activity
Which two types of cells are involved in wrapping axons with myelin?
Oligodendrocytes and Schwann Cells. Picking up neural activity and responding to see if they need to make transmission faster or slower
_________________ act like bioelectric repeaters to relay an electrical impulse from node to node down an axon.
Nodes of Ranvier
What new hypothesis is supported by the experiments in Field’s laboratory?
The Myelin Sheath changes thickness based on nervous system plasticity which is dependent upon the addition or subtraction of myelin sheath.
Self-generated (or internally generated) brain waves, consisting of oscillations waves of different frequency serve as a key mechanism for:
Coupling neurons across distant regions of the brain
