aim
to investigate if articulatory suppression can influence recalling a written list of phonologically dissimilar letters in order
research method
lab experiment
procedure
Participants looked at a list of letters that they had to recall
Had to recall the letters while saying the numbers “1” and “2” for articulatory suppression
Control group was shown the printed list, instructed to wair another 5 seconds then to write the correct orders of the letters.
10 lists consisting of 7 letters randomly constructed from F, K, L, M, R, X, and Q due to lack of similar sound
Both experiments for the control and experimental group were repeated 10 times
strengths
the study was well controlled which means it has a high level of internal validity
limitations
the study is artificial, lacking ecological validity
conclusion
this links to the working memory model as articulatory suppression prevents rehearsal in the phonological loop due to overload of information. If the phonological loop is disrupted, it will lead to a less accurate working memory due to limited capacity
