Polar covalent bond
A type of bond where electrons are unequally shared between atoms, resulting in a molecule with a partial positive end and a partial negative end.
Hydrogen bonds
Strong intermolecular forces of attraction between molecules that occur due to the polar nature of water.
Electrolytes
Substances that dissociate into ions in solution and are capable of conducting electricity.
Homogeneous mixture
A mixture that has a uniform composition throughout, such as solutions.
Like dissolves like
The principle that polar solvents dissolve polar solutes, and non-polar solvents dissolve non-polar solutes.
Solubility
The maximum amount of solute that will dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a specified temperature.
Saturated solution
A solution that holds the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve at a particular temperature.
Concentration
A measure of how much solute is present in a given volume of solvent.
Molarity
A way to express concentration; it is the number of moles of solute per liter of solution.
Parts per million (ppm)
A unit of measurement used to describe the concentration of a solute in a solution, indicating the number of parts of solute per million parts of solution.
