Gene

A specific base sequence of DNA
Codes for amino acid sequence of polypeptide or a functional RNA

Genome

The complete set of all the genes in a cell, including the genes in the nucleus, mitochondria and chloroplasts

Proteome

The full range of all the proteins that a cell is able to produce using its genome

Allele

Alternative form of a particular gene
Different sequence of bases, codes for a different polypeptide

Gene pool

All the different alleles of all the genes found within a population

Triplet

Every three DNA bases in sequence of a gene

Possible combinations

4 different nucleotides
4 cubed = 64 possible combinations of triplets to code for 20 amino acids

Universal code

Same triplets code for same amino acids in all organisms

Non-overlapping

Each base only read once, each base part of only one triplet
