Imperialism
The policy of extending a country's power and influence through colonization, military force, or other means.
Total War
A war that requires the mobilization of a country's entire population and where civilians are considered legitimate targets of military operations.
Militarism
A belief that a government should maintain a strong military and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests.
Nationalism
A political ideology that emphasizes the interests of a particular nation or group, often in opposition to other nations.
Holodomor
A man-made famine in Soviet Ukraine from 1932 to 1933 that resulted in millions of deaths; part of Stalin's policies of collectivization.
The Young Turks
A reformist group that overthrew the Ottoman Sultan in 1908 and sought to modernize the Ottoman Empire.
Treaty of Versailles
The peace treaty that officially ended World War I, imposing heavy reparations and territorial losses on Germany.
The Armenian Genocide
The mass extermination of the Armenian population by the Ottoman Empire during World War I, resulting in 600,000 to 1.5 million deaths.
The Holocaust
The systematic extermination of six million Jews and millions of others deemed 'undesirable' by the Nazi regime during World War II.
Bolsheviks
A faction of the Marxist Russian Social Democratic Labor Party led by Vladimir Lenin that played a major role in the Russian Revolution of 1917.
