public policy
What government does to or for its citizens to meet a public need or goal as determined by a legislative body or other authorized officials.
elite access
The ability of the business elite to deal directly with high-ranking government administrators in order to avoid full compliance with regulations.
models of policymaking
Conceptual frameworks that explain how public policy is made, including institutional, group, elite, rational, and incremental models.
incremental model
Sees 'new' public policy as a slightly modified continuation of past policy, taking existing policies as a starting point.
participatory democratic model
A model where the public shows high levels of interest, knowledge, and participation in civic life, influencing policy decisions.
top 10 percent rule
Texas law that guarantees automatic admission to public universities for those graduating in the top 10 percent of their high school class.
Medicaid
A program that provides medical care for low-income individuals, funded by both state and federal sources.
SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program)
A program that provides food assistance to low-income individuals and families.
privatization
The transfer of government services or assets to the private sector, often aimed at increasing efficiency.
fracking
