Acid
A substance that contains Hydrogen (H) and ionizes in water to produce H⁺ ions.
Hydronium ion (H₃O⁺)
Ion formed when H⁺ ions from acids attach to water.
pH < 7
Indicator that a solution is acidic.
Neutralization
Reaction between an acid and a base producing salt and water.
Salt
Product formed from the reaction of an acid with a base.
Base
A substance typically composed of metal oxides or hydroxides that can accept protons.
Hydroxide ion (OH⁻)
An ion produced by an alkali when dissolved in water.
Weak acid and base
Substances that do not fully ionize in solution.
Buffer
A solution that resists pH change upon the addition of small amounts of acid or base.
Henderson-Hasselbalch Equation
pH = pKa + log([Conjugate Base]/[Acid]), used for calculating the pH of buffers.
Buffer capacity
The maximum amount of acid or base that a buffer can neutralize without losing effectiveness.
Observable reaction with acids and carbonates
Bubbling due to CO₂ release.
