What is grey matter?

Outside part of the brain, composed of cell bodies and dendrites

What is the white matter?

Inside part of the brain, composed of myelinated axons that connect the different structures of the brain

What is localization?

Idea that certain parts of the brain control certain functions

What are circuits in the brain?

Specific functions controlled by connected areas

Which parts of the brain was retained throughout mammalian evolution?

Brainstem and Midbrain

What are the lobes of the cerebral cortex?

Frontal lobe
Parietal lobe
Temporal lobe
Occipital lobe

What is the frontal lobe important for?

Higher cognitive functions, like planning, emotion, language and voluntary movement

What is the occipital lobe for?

Visual information

What is the temporal lobe for?

Hearing, language and recognition

What is the primary motor cortex?

Located in the frontal lobe, controls voluntary movement

What is the somatosensory cortex?

Located in the parietal lobe, it processes touch sensations for various body parts
