Militarism
The belief in building up a strong armed forces to prepare for war; characterized by an arms race and military planning like the Schlieffen Plan.
Alliances
Agreements between nations to aid and protect one another; notably the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy) and the Triple Entente (France, Russia, Britain).
Imperialism
The policy of extending a country's power and influence through colonization, military force, or other means, often leading to competition for colonies.
Nationalism
A strong pride in one's nation or ethnic group, which can lead to tensions, notably in the Balkans prior to WWI.
Trench Warfare
A type of combat in which opposing troops fight from trenches facing each other, resulting in terrible living conditions and high casualties.
DORA (Defence of the Realm Act)
Legislation that allowed the British government to control various aspects of life during WWI, including censorship and resource management.
Rationing
The controlled distribution of scarce resources, goods, or services, introduced during WWI to manage the food supply.
Conscientious Objectors (COs)
Individuals who refuse to serve in the armed forces on the grounds of freedom of thought, conscience, or religion, often facing legal and social challenges.
