Limiting Factors
Nutritional requirements that can restrict plant growth when they are limited.
Humus
Organic matter in soil that consists of decaying plant matter and contains nutrients.
Cation Exchange
The process where mineral cations on clay particles are replaced with hydrogen ions facilitated by plant root excretion.
Turgor Pressure
The force of water pushing a cell membrane against the cell wall, determining cell rigidity.
Transpiration
Loss of water by evaporation, primarily from leaves, that generates negative pressure in xylem.
Apoplastic Transport
Movement of substances through the spaces between cells or along cell walls.
Guard Cells
Specialized cells that surround stomata and control their opening and closing.
Photosynthesis
The process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy (glucose) using CO2 and H2O.
Stomata
Pores in leaf surfaces that allow gas exchange, surrounded by guard cells.
Phloem
Vascular tissue responsible for the transport of sugars and other metabolic products downward from the leaves.
