920 lbs
What is the maximum weight per seat?
240 lbs
What is the minimum solo pilot weight?
135 lbs

18.3/9.7
What is the usable capacity of the fuel tanks?
16.9/9.4
When should you apply carb heat?
visible moisture, carb temp in yellow arc, or MAP below 18’’
What are the wind limitations?
surface winds above 25 including gusts, gust spread exceeding 15, and continued flight in moderate-extreme turbulence
What category of pilots do the wind limitations apply to?
Pilots with less than 200 hours in helicopters, 50 of which being in the R22
define land immediately and land as soon as practical
land immediately: land on the nearest clear area. Be prepared to enter an autorotation if required.
land as soon as practical: landing is at pilots discretion based on nature of the problem and available landing areas.
What is Vy?
53 KIAS
What is maximum range?
83 KIAS
Why do we keep the left door on when possible?
To prevent loose objects striking the tail rotor
What are the most likely temperature ranges for carb ice to occur?
25-86F, dew point spread less than 27F
Should you fly over assemblies of people?
No. If unavoidable, fly as high as practical, preferably at least 2000’ AGL
When does blade slap occur?
shallow, high speed descents and turns
What techniques should you use when overflying noise abatement areas?
Remain always above 500’ AGL and preferably above 1000’ AGL. Vary your flight path. Select the least noise-sensitive route.
What is Vh versus Vne?
Vh is the maximum continuous power speed, and Vne is the structural safety limit
What structure is the tailcone?
monocoque
What material is the firewall composed of?
stainless steel
What instruments depend on the pitot-static system?
Airspeed indicator, altimeter, and vertical speed indicator
Where does the engine tach reading come from?
The right magneto
Where does the rotor tach reading come from?
Magnetic senders at the main gearbox drive yoke.
How does the clock and tachometers stay running with the battery switch off?
There is a bypass circuit that continues to provide power to the clock and tachs as long as the clutch is engaged.
What provides the readings for the low oil pressure and low fuel lights?
An independent sensor in either system. They are not dependent on the gauges.
How do the main and tail rotor chip sensors work?
The detectors are magnetic devices in the drain plug of each gearbox. When metallic particles contact the magnet, it closes the circuit, illuminating the caution light.
What is an EMU?
Engine Monitoring Unit. Its a digital recording device in the RPM governor control box and monitors engine and rotor status for exceedances for the purpose of maintenance.
Why is there a fresh air inlet in the nose of the aircraft?
For defogging of the windshield and ventilation
When does an ELT start transmitting?
When subjected to high G loads or manually turned on
Which documents associated with the aircraft should NOT be carried during flight?
Aircraft logbook and engine logbook.
What preventative maintenance is a private pilot allowed to perform?
Replace safety pins, light bulbs, reflectors, spark plugs, engine air filter. Change engine oil and filter. clean chip detectors. replenish gearbox oil. remove or replace gascolator and cowling. service or replace battery. replace landing gear shoes. clean or refinish exterior.
What information must a pilot record when doing preventative maintenance?
Date of work, description, total hours of the aircraft, pilot certificate number, and signature of the pilot.
What are the recommended and minimum engine oil levels?
6 qts / 4 qts
How often should the oil filter and oil be changed?
every 50 hours or 4 months
Why should fuel tanks be topped off while in storage?
To prevent condensation and prolong bladder material life.
