What is oogenesis
the process of forming female gametes (eggs)
what step of oogenesis happens before birth
oogonia stem cells will complete mitosis during fetal development resulting in primary oocytes (diploid, 2n). A few of the primary oocytes will enter prophase I shortly prior to birth but the development of all ova will arrest until after puberty
what will happen to the majority of the primary oocytes
many will begin to degenerate in a process called atresia
describe the step of oogenesis that happen as puberty commences
the primary oocytes will continue through meiosis I as the follicle develops into the secondary oocyte
how is the meiosis in oogenesis during puberty different than that of spermatogenesis
instead of having 2 daughter secondary oocytes after meiosis I like in spermatogenesis we end up with only one daughter cell and a much smaller polar body due to unequal cytoplasmic distribution
what eventually happens to the secondary ooctye
will be what is eventually ovulated and taken up by the uterine tube
what happens to the secondary oocyte once its fertilized
proceeds through meiosis II giving off second polar body and a final daughter cell. resulting cell is a fully diploid fertilized zygote
