Rule of Law
The law is in charge of the country. There are laws for the lawmakers to follow.
Limited Government
There are natural limits on what the government is allowed to do, it does not need to be involved in everything all of the time.
Checks and Balances
We split up our government into 3 branches and gave them the power to stop each other.
Federalism
We have one national/federal government for the whole country but each state still gets their own government.
Consent of the Governed
In order to be legitimate, a government has to be approved of by the people it controls
Popular Sovereignty
The people have the ultimate power and they can change the government if they want to.
Separation of Powers
We split the government into 3 branches so that if one gets out of control it doesn't lead to a dictatorship
