Name the 5 types of evidence that support evolution

Homologous structures, Vestigal structures, DNA evidence, Embryological Development, Fossil record.

2
New cards

What is the difference between homologous and analogous structures?

Analogous- shared structures same function different origin. Homologous- parts of body similar in structure different functions.

3
New cards

What does the presence of a vestigial leg bone in whales suggest about the structure of its ancestor

Had functional legs and lived on land, complete and functioning.

4
New cards

how would you determine which animals are more closely related to each other given the DNA or amino acid sequence?

The more similar the DNA is between the 2 animals= closely related, fewer differences= closer evolutionary relationship.

5
New cards

Why is having fossil re odd useful? What are its limitations?

Shows evidence of evolution over time- shows us how species were similar and changed gradually, some traits evolved. Reveals extinct species. Limitations- fossils can be destroyed from natural disasters, GAPS IN THE RECORD (TIMELIME)

What are the two models of speed of evolution?

1- Gradualism: Changes happen slowly and gradually over a long period of time rather than suddenly. 2- Punctuated Equilbrium species after experience long periods of time, little or no significant change punctuated by relatively short period of rapid change. There is a big change in environment. Quick bursts in small populations.
