main aim
to argue that we cannot infer the cause of the universe
premise one
in order for the teleological argument to be convincing it must show that God is the only plausible cause of the universe
premise two
the world may have arisen through a random process
premise three
the world may have been designed by a being but not created by the same being
the creator may not have had divine qualities
premise four
natural selection may have led to apparent design in the world
conclusion
God sis not the only plausible cause of the universe so the teleological argument is unconvincing
the Epicurean hypothesis
Epicurus argued that given an infinite amount of time a finite number of particles in motion will take ever possible form thus leading to the appearance of a design without a designer
Kant’s argument
he argued that the structure of the world does indicate design but this may not be done by the actual maker of the universe, the maker may not be good or wise
Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection
this provides a good explanation of the apparent design of living things without the needs for a designer
rather natural processes such as mutation and reproduction lead to the same result
