A legal right that grants the creator of original works exclusive control over the use of their creation.
Exploitation of Songs
The use of songs in various media; in a positive sense, it represents how widely and effectively a song is utilized to generate income.
Song Plugger
A professional who promotes songs to recording artists and labels to get them cut or recorded.
Mechanical Royalties
Payments received by songwriters and publishers for the reproduction of their music, typically based on the number of copies sold.
Split Sheets
Legal documents that outline the percentage of ownership and royalties for each songwriter involved in a song.
Controlled Composition
Songs written, owned, or controlled by the artist, often limited by record labels in terms of payment for only a certain number per album.
Sync License
A license that permits the use of a song in synchronization with visual media, such as films and commercials.
Passive Income
Earnings received on a regular basis without active involvement, such as ongoing royalties from songs.
Active Income
Earnings obtained from performing a job or service, requiring active participation, such as concert performances.
In Context Use
When a song is used in a film or video in a way that makes sense within the narrative of the scene.
Out of Context Use
When a song is used in a film or video without relevance to the narrative, often as background noise.
PROs (Performing Rights Organizations)
Organizations that collect royalties on behalf of songwriters and publishers from the public performance of their music.
Fair Use
A legal doctrine that permits limited use of copyrighted material without requiring permission from the rights holders.
Co-Publishing Deal
An arrangement where a songwriter shares ownership of their copyright with a publishing company, usually involving a percentage split.
Draw (in publishing)
A predetermined amount of money given to songwriters by a publisher, to be recouped from future royalties.
Tin Pan Alley
A historical district in New York City known for its significant role in the development of the popular music industry in the early 20th century.
